Why not let restaurants and supermarkets sell their food waste to processing plants where it could be heat-treated in large volumes, then fed safely, cheaply and sustainably to pigs? Not everyone in the farming business agrees: having lived through foot and mouth, they are bound to be cautious. They also presumably see that it’s not only a matter of relaxing the laws, but of creating a new infrastructure of processing plants (though some of these already exist, treating vegetable waste such as mash from the brewing industry - great for bierwurst, one imagines - and uneaten tofu); and a new, or more extensive, regulatory structure.
